Young Cadets Assume Leadership Roles On St. Catherine's Annual Boxing Day

St. Catherine’s Academy will hold its 5th Annual “Boxing Day” on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.  During this special day, the youngest cadets from 3rd to 6th grade will switch roles with the cadet leadership, which is comprised of 7th and 8th graders.  The young cadets will assume important roles for the day and will proudly lead the school.  Third grader, Juaquin Nuñez will stand in as Regimental Commander and will lead the school for the day.

“We wanted to institute Boxing Day at St. Catherine’s Academy in order to inspire our younger students,” said Colonel Barry Bizzell, Commandant at St. Catherine’s Academy. "The cadets truly look forward to such a special day.”

In the British military, the tradition of Boxing Day is to switch junior soldiers into senior leadership roles for the day while the actual senior officers and Staff Non-commissioned Officers assume lesser, working roles in their commands.  The popular holiday is held in England in December.

St. Catherine’s has a unique military tradition, well-known for teaching self-discipline, respect, and leadership to its students.  Cadets in grades three and above participate in daily marching and drill exercises.  They also earn medals and ribbons for good behavior and move through ranks that simulate military roles.  Participation in the military program teaches cadets important life skills, such as overcoming obstacles and challenges, planning, following directions, working on a team, and leading others.  The military department is led by Colonel Barry Bizzell, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), Captain Angel Ramos, U.S. Army, and Staff Sergeant Tyr May, U.S. Marine Corps.

St. Catherine’s Academy, founded in 1889 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, is an independent Catholic school with a military tradition for boys in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade.  The school offers both day and boarding opportunities.
