Sergeant Tyr May
Originally from Indiana, S/Sgt May has served 11 years in the Marine Corps infantry. While on active duty, he attended several military training courses and served overseas in Okinawa, Japan in the 1990’s. In 1998, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve, and after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001, his unit provided a force in readiness for FEMA. He later participated in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, serving as a Team leader for a surveillance and long-range marksmanship team. In 2005, S/Sgt May ended his military service, transitioning fully into the civilian sector.
Upon initially leaving active duty in 1998, S/Sgt May had a vision of becoming a teacher and sharing his life lessons that he learned in the marines. In 1999 he discovered St. Catherine’s and was hired as a coach for the JV football team and as a drill instructor for the 2nd and 3rd graders. He immediately embraced the unique and very effective learning environment that only exists at St Catherine's. Over the years, S/Sgt May learned how to adjust his leadership style learned in the Marines and bring out the best in each cadet. Several of his first cadets are adults now, and his lifelong, closest friends.
S/Sgt May is also a Licensed Land Surveyor, outdoorsman, martial artist, health nut and animal lover.
