First & Second Graders Helps Fund a Pair of Goats for a Family in Need

December 15, 2016

The season of advent has inspired students at St. Catherine’s Academy to help the less fortunate this holiday season. This year, 1st and 2nd grade classes raised enough money to sponsor a pair of goats for families in need as part of World Vision’s ‘Give a Goat Program.’ World Vision, the non-profit organization, provides farmers worldwide the opportunity to own their own goats to feed and provide for their families.

According to the non-profit, farmers worldwide are in great need of goats to feed their families and earn a living.  The farmers rely on goat’s milk as it is easily digestible and a great source of protein to help their children grow healthy. The goats also provide fertilization for a farmer’s garden which helps them grow nutritious fruits and vegetables.  The family can also sell any extra milk to earn a living. Through the World Vision non-profit organization, goats can be sponsored to help families overcome many needs.

This year, at the beginning of Advent, Mrs. Willey’s 1st and 2nd grade class chose to sponsor a pair of goats to help a special family. There is a total of 11 students in SCA’s 1st and 2nd grade class that participated in the “Give a Goat’ program. Each student was tasked with raising between $10-$15 dollars each.  Many of them raised money by doing extra chores at home, while others donated their savings.  “One student even donated his tooth fairy money,” said Mrs. Willey.  “I’m just so proud of my students for their enthusiasm to help other kids in need this holiday season.”

The fundraiser took approximately 3 weeks to complete and raised a total of $150.00 that will help fund 2 goats.  The program stated that 1 healthy dairy goat can give up to 16 cups of milk a day.  There are over 100 countries that participate in the program, including several countries in Africa such as: Zimbabwe, Uganda and Zambia.
